Episode 3 starts off admitting that foster parenting is a roller coaster ride of emotion. Drew points out that while normal parents have a ton of resources available to support them, foster parents don’t have nearly as many places to discuss the things we deal with. There are resources on the Internet though:
- Google + Foster Parent Rescue Community
- Google + Foster Care Adoption Community
- Facebook Foster Parenting Toolbox
Groups like these are important as they offer information and support for foster parents in real time about all the issues foster parents deal with. You name it someone in one of those groups has experienced it.
Then we meet “Peter” and “Karen”, our long term foster children. They are a brother/sister team that has spent every night for more than a year in our home. What in the world is that smell? Then Drew gets a crash course in foster/bio parent relations when we have to monitor nightly phone calls. At first a very awkward situation but it did pay off a few times.
Peter and Karen have stories to tell us about their lives before coming to live with us, and not many of them are pleasant.
Do bio families lie to foster parents? You bet, and they tell stories to their kids that make them think they are going to be leaving foster care very soon, even though there is no reason to think so. This episode covers the first two months of their time with us.
We have another Inspirational Quote this week: “Family is not defined by genes. It is built and maintained through love.”- Unknown
Even though this quote fits our family, Drew points out that the kids resemble he and his wife to the point people question that they are not genetically related.
Then we have our news story. This week Drew highlights the failure of the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services as they place a four year old boy into the home of a convicted pedophile. Finally Drew ends the show on a fun note, debuting a new segment called “Parenting Tips From A Crazy Person”. This weeks tip is all about fumigating your home when foster kids come bring…ghosts into the house. Grab your can of air and learn how to protect everyone from those pesky poltergeists!
